Jamila speaks with joy about her recovery

“How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of those who bring good news.” – Isaiah 52:7

Few people are aware of how devastating obstetric fistula can be. Women can live for years – sometimes decades – with constant incontinence, often isolated from their families and communities because of the stigma and shame associated with the condition.

Jamila experienced this reality after the birth of her second child. A severe tear during labour was treated with basic stitches, but the deeper injury went unrecognised. Soon after, she began to experience the uncontrollable leaking caused by obstetric fistula.

The impact was immediate and overwhelming. Like many women living with obstetric fistula, Jamila faced not only serious physical challenges, but also social isolation and loss of dignity.

Through a cbm-supported partner, Jamila was able to access the surgery and aftercare she needed. With skilled medical support and compassionate follow-up care, her condition was successfully treated.

Today, Jamila speaks with joy about her recovery and the chance to rebuild her life. She is no longer defined by her condition, and can once again participate in her family and community with confidence and dignity.

Her husband shares in that joy, expressing deep gratitude for the care she received and the change it has brought to their lives.

Obstetric fistula remains a significant but largely hidden issue in places where access to quality maternal healthcare is limited. Yet with timely surgery and appropriate care, it is a condition that can be treated.

Stories like Jamila’s are a powerful reminder of what is possible when people have access to the care they need – and the dignity they deserve.
