Strength and hope for Sofia

“Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have…” – Hebrews 13:16

In parts of Kenya, changing weather patterns and prolonged drought have made daily life increasingly difficult for many families

For Sofia, these challenges are part of everyday life.

Sofia lives with a physical disability that makes standing and walking painful. Yet each day, she does what she can to support her family – working long hours on nearby farms whenever work is available.

“It is such a challenge to do farm work because of my leg,” she explains. “Even walking can be a challenge.”

Despite this, Sofia continues to show remarkable determination.

But in recent years, drought has made life even harder.

Water sources have become unreliable, and crops have struggled to grow. For families who depend on the land, this means fewer opportunities to earn an income and increasing pressure just to meet basic needs.

For Sofia, even accessing water can be difficult.

With nearby rivers running dry, her children often walk long distances to collect what they can – sometimes carrying heavy containers over challenging terrain.

It is a daily reminder of how closely linked water, food, and wellbeing are.

For families already facing the challenges of disability, these pressures can be even greater. Tasks that others might take for granted – collecting water, accessing support, or earning an income – can become significant barriers.

Yet even in these circumstances, there is strength.

Sofia continues to care for her family with resilience and courage. And through the support of cbm’s local partners, families like hers are being reached with practical, life-changing assistance.

This includes access to food supplies, clean water, and essential healthcare – helping to stabilise families during difficult periods and support their wellbeing over time.

For people living with disabilities, additional support is also provided to ensure they can access these services. Mobility aids, for example, can make it easier to reach distribution points or move safely within their communities.

These are simple but vital interventions.

They help ensure that no one is left behind.

And they make it possible for families like Sofia’s to keep going – to find stability, and to look ahead with renewed hope.

Because when basic needs are met, even in challenging environments, something important begins to grow.

Children are better able to stay healthy and attend school. Families can focus on rebuilding their livelihoods. And communities can begin to recover and adapt.

Sofia’s story is one of perseverance.

It is also a reminder that, with the right support, families facing complex challenges can continue to move forward.

Across Kenya, efforts are ongoing to reach communities most affected by drought and hardship – with a focus on inclusion, ensuring people with disabilities are part of every response.

Because lasting change happens when everyone is included.

And for Sofia, that means not just surviving, but having the support she needs to care for her family and build a more secure future.
