For families living in poverty, earning a stable income can be incredibly difficult. For people with disabilities and their families, the barriers can be even greater – especially in remote communities where opportunities are limited and seasonal weather conditions affect food production and livelihoods.
Sengoulai and Khala know these struggles well.
The couple grow vegetables and herbs including dill, bok choi, coriander, and lettuce to support their family. For years, they worked hard simply to produce enough food for their own household. Because they relied on seasonal growing conditions, they could only harvest crops for around four months each year.
Income was uncertain, and financial pressure weighed heavily on the family.
“We were very stressed,” Sengoulai shared. “Previously we had a big debt.”
Through a disability-inclusive livelihoods programme supported by cbm and local partners, Sengoulai and Khala received a greenhouse that completely transformed what was possible for their family.
The greenhouse now allows them to grow crops all year-round, protecting their produce from difficult weather conditions and creating a much more reliable source of income.
What was once a small seasonal garden has become a thriving livelihood.
Today, the family’s annual income has increased more than ninefold compared to what they previously earned. With this increased stability, Sengoulai and Khala have been able to clear their debt and begin planning for the future with renewed confidence and hope.
“We are so happy,” Sengoulai said. “Now we have more income and we have cleared all of our debt.”
The impact has extended far beyond finances.
With a more stable income, the family can now better support their children’s education – including helping their son attend university, something that once felt far beyond reach.
