Stories > Hope for Sarbendra
“...but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.” – Isaiah 40:31
The electric shock caused devastating injuries, and his left leg had to be amputated.
Sarbendra’s mother, Padamkala, was raising her children alone following the death of her husband. She did everything she could to help her son, eventually managing to get him a prosthetic leg.
But it was poor quality, did not fit properly, and eventually broke apart completely.
Without a prosthetic leg, Sarbendra could no longer make the hour-long journey along mountain paths to school.
“I had to stop wearing my old prosthetic leg,” Sarbendra explains. “I also had to stop going to school. I was stuck at home… and I missed going to school.”
Thanks to compassionate supporters like you, help was able to reach Sarbendra in his own community.
Through cbm’s local partner in Nepal, a mobile rehabilitation camp travelled to his remote area. There, Sarbendra was assessed and measured for a new prosthetic leg.
It was exactly the opportunity he needed.
With his new prosthetic fitted, Sarbendra could walk freely again – and, importantly for this determined teenager, he could finally return to school.
“I have now returned to school after getting my new prosthetic leg,” he says. “I like it because I can walk freely on it.”
For Sarbendra, being able to walk again means so much more than mobility.
It means making the journey to school alongside other students. It means learning, spending time with friends, regaining independence, and looking forward to the future again.
Sarbendra understands how important education can be for his future. He hopes that one day he can secure a government job and help provide greater security for his family.
And now, he has the opportunity to keep working towards that dream.
Your support helps cbm and our local partners reach children and young people with disabilities in communities where healthcare and rehabilitation can be difficult to access. It helps provide prosthetics and other assistive devices, rehabilitation, surgery, and the ongoing support people need to participate more fully in their communities.
For Sarbendra, that support has helped turn days spent isolated at home into days spent walking to school again.
