Restoring sight for Patrick

Patrick lives in a remote community in the Highlands of Papua New Guinea, where reaching healthcare and other essential services can be difficult.

From early childhood, Patrick lived with cataracts in both eyes. As his vision worsened, everyday life became more challenging. Bright sunlight caused intense glare, and at school he struggled to see the board – even when sitting at the front of the class.

Despite this, Patrick remained determined. He continued helping his family with daily tasks and stayed committed to his learning. He also held onto a dream of becoming a pastor in his community.

Without access to treatment, Patrick’s vision loss risked limiting his education and future opportunities.

Through cbm’s work with local partners, a community-based field worker was able to reach Patrick’s village. After assessing his eyesight, they referred him for specialist care.

Patrick and his mother travelled to Goroka Eye Hospital, where he received sight-saving cataract surgery. The procedure replaced the cloudy lenses in his eyes with clear ones, restoring his vision.

The next day, when his eye coverings were removed, Patrick was able to see clearly again. With glasses to support his vision, he returned home and saw familiar landmarks in sharp detail – including a mountain he remembered from before his sight began to fade.

“I’m happy now. I can see clearly,” Patrick said.

With his sight restored, Patrick can return to school with confidence and continue working towards his future.
