In a remote community in Papua New Guinea, six-year-old Monica is discovering the joy of seeing clearly.

But it wasn’t always this way.

Monica was born with cataracts in both eyes. From the very beginning, her world was clouded – shapes blurred, faces unclear, and the simple details of everyday life just out of reach.

As she grew older, the challenges became more noticeable.

Like many children, Monica was eager to learn. But seeing the chalkboard at school, reading books, or keeping up with lessons would have been almost impossible without help. In communities where access to eye care is limited, vision problems often go unrecognised – and children can be left behind, not because they lack ability, but because they simply cannot see.

For Monica’s family, the situation felt overwhelming.

Specialist medical care was far away, and the cost of surgery was beyond what they could afford. Without treatment, Monica risked missing out on her education – and with it, the chance to build an independent future.

But Monica’s story didn’t end there.

Thanks to the support of compassionate people like you, she was able to receive life-changing cataract surgery at a cbm-supported eye clinic.

In a relatively simple procedure, the cloudy lenses that had dimmed her vision were removed.

And just like that, her world began to change.

Light became clearer. Faces came into focus. The classroom – once a place of confusion – became a place of possibility.

For Monica, it wasn’t just about seeing better. It was about finally being able to take part.

Her mother, Joan, was filled with gratitude and joy, seeing her daughter no longer limited by avoidable blindness.

Today, Monica has the opportunity every child deserves – to learn, to grow, and to imagine a future full of potential.
