Hope in the midst of hardship for Liasoa

…Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these… you did for me.” – Matthew 25:40

With the right support, Liasoa and her grandmother are finding strength, care, and renewed hope

In southern Madagascar, life has become increasingly difficult for families facing the ongoing effects of drought and food insecurity.

For nine-year-old Liasoa, these challenges are even greater.

Born with physical and intellectual disabilities, Liasoa depends on her grandmother for everything – from eating and washing to moving from place to place. When her parents were unable to care for her, it was her grandmother who stepped in with courage and love, becoming her constant support.

Each day is a quiet act of devotion.

Her grandmother carries Liasoa on her back as she searches for water or gathers firewood. She feeds her slowly, one spoonful at a time. And in moments of uncertainty, she comforts her – doing all she can to keep her safe and cared for.

But in a region where crops have repeatedly failed and food is scarce, even the simplest things can become overwhelming.

Families are often left with very little to eat. Meals are stretched as far as possible, sometimes reduced to thin porridge that fills the stomach but offers little nutrition.

For children like Liasoa, the effects can be serious.

Without consistent access to nourishing food, clean water, and healthcare, children living with disabilities are especially vulnerable. They are often the last to receive help and the least able to access support on their own.

Yet even in the face of these challenges, there is hope.

Through cbm’s local partners, communities are being supported with essential food supplies, clean water, and access to healthcare. Special care is taken to ensure families living with disability are not overlooked – reaching those who might otherwise be left behind.

This includes identifying the most vulnerable households and providing practical support where it is needed most.

For families like Liasoa’s, this support can make all the difference.

It means access to food that brings strength and nourishment. Clean water that protects against illness. And medical care that helps children stay healthy and resilient.

It also brings something less tangible, but just as important: reassurance.

The knowledge that they are not alone.

That someone sees them, values them, and is walking alongside them through difficult times.

Liasoa’s grandmother continues to care for her with remarkable strength. And with the right support, families like theirs can begin to move forward with renewed hope.

Because even in the hardest circumstances, change is possible.

Communities can recover. Children can grow stronger. And families can find stability again.

This is the difference compassionate support can make.

Not just in moments of crisis, but in building a pathway toward a more secure and hopeful future.

And for children like Liasoa, that future matters deeply.

It means being cared for, protected, and given every possible chance to live with dignity.
