Seven-year-old Kyle loves to play basketball.

Like many children his age in the Philippines, he spends his days running, playing, and dreaming about the future. When asked what he wants to be when he grows up, his answer is simple – he just wants to play.

But for a time, that simple joy was slipping away.

One day, while playing with friends, Kyle ran through a group of trees. In an instant, small twigs scratched his eyes. It seemed like a minor accident – the kind that happens to children all the time.

But this moment would change everything.

Not long after, Kyle’s vision began to fade.

His parents, April and Edmond, took him to a doctor, where they received unexpected news. Kyle had developed traumatic cataracts – a clouding of the eye caused by injury.

They were shocked.

How could a healthy, active little boy suddenly be at risk of losing his sight?

At first, Kyle tried to carry on as normal. He continued going to school, doing his best to keep up with his classmates. But each day became harder.

“It was becoming so hard,” Kyle said. “I wanted my eyesight to get better.”

Without treatment, his condition would only worsen.

The solution was clear – Kyle needed cataract surgery. But for his family, it was out of reach. Like many families living in poverty, they were already struggling to meet their daily needs. The cost of surgery was simply too much.

Still, they held onto hope.

“We prayed with all our hearts that somebody could help our child,” his mother shared.

And that hope was answered.

Through a cbm-supported hospital, Kyle was able to receive the surgery he needed. In a relatively simple procedure, the cloudy lens in his eye was removed and replaced, restoring his sight.

The change was immediate.

When the bandages were taken off, Kyle’s face lit up with joy. He could see clearly again – his family, his surroundings, and the world he thought he might lose.

For his parents, it was a moment of overwhelming relief and gratitude.

Today, Kyle is back where he belongs – at school, learning alongside his friends, and out on the court, playing the game he loves.

His future is no longer uncertain.

With his sight restored, Kyle has the opportunity to continue his education, grow in confidence, and dream about what lies ahead. What once felt like it was slipping away is now within reach again.
