Seven-year-old Kajal is full of dreams.

Some days, she wants to be a doctor. Other days, she dreams of joining the police. Like many children her age, her imagination is alive with possibility – a future waiting to unfold.

Her father, Babulal, smiles as he shares her ambitions. But behind that smile is a quiet concern.

Because without help, Kajal may never have the chance to fulfil those dreams.

Kajal was born with bowlegs, a condition that makes it difficult and painful to stand and walk. In the remote region of Nepal where her family lives, access to treatment is limited – and even if it were available, it would be far beyond what her family could afford.

She is not alone.

Her younger brother, five-year-old Omkar, also lives with the same condition. And their father knows all too well what that means for their future – because he has lived it himself.

“My father and I have the same condition as my children,” Babulal explains. “But because of poverty… we couldn’t have treatment and it is too late.”

For Babulal, the physical challenges are only part of the story.

He has endured a lifetime of stigma and limitation. Work is difficult. Opportunities are few. And the weight of providing for his family rests on shoulders already strained by hardship.

So when he realised that both Kajal and Omkar would face the same struggles, it was heartbreaking.

“I was heartbroken… I have already faced the same issue. The pain, the stigma… I suffer a lot by seeing their struggle.”

Yet even in the midst of these challenges, there is hope.

Babulal works tirelessly, selling crops and doing whatever he can to support his family. Kajal continues to go to school, holding onto her dreams. And little Omkar plays alongside his sister, both of them unaware of how different their future could be.

Because for children like Kajal and Omkar, early treatment can change everything.

With access to life-changing surgery, along with rehabilitation and assistive devices, they can grow up free from the pain and limitations that have shaped their father’s life. They can walk, learn, and participate fully in their communities.

They can pursue their dreams.
