But after sight-saving cataract surgery, John can now shine his brightest

Eight-year-old John was going needlessly blind from cataracts

John lives in the Philippines with his mum Mary, his dad Wilson, and his baby sister Alexa. He is bright, determined, and loves school – especially Maths. His teachers describe him as a star pupil with a promising future ahead.

John dreams of becoming an engineer one day.

“I want to build houses,” he said. “Because I want to help my family who don’t have money.”

But despite his big dreams, John’s future was becoming uncertain. He was slowly losing his sight because of congenital cataracts. 

As his vision worsened, everyday life became more difficult. Reading was hard, studying became frustrating, and school – something he loved – was slipping out of reach.

“I can’t read well when my eyesight is blurred and I can’t study well. I feel sad. I get upset when I can’t read. I love reading books.” 

Without treatment, John risked permanent vision loss. For children with cataracts, early surgery is especially important while their brains are still developing visual pathways. 

John’s parents were deeply worried about what the future might hold for their son.

“He came to us and apologised and said, ‘I’m so sorry that I will not be able to fulfil my dreams to become an engineer because of my condition,’” his father Wilson recalled. “I was actually thinking that this could be the end… he’s going to be blind.” 

The family simply could not afford specialist surgery. Like many families living in poverty, they were already struggling to meet basic daily needs.

“We only have hand to mouth existence… we don’t have money to afford the surgery,” Wilson explained. 

But thanks for generous supporters like you, John was able to receive sight-saving cataract surgery at a cbm-funded hospital.

When the bandages came off, John could see clearly again.

His parents were overwhelmed with gratitude – thankful to God, and thankful for the kindness of supporters who helped make the surgery possible. 

Today, John is back at school, learning alongside his classmates and enjoying the things he once feared he would lose forever. He is determined to keep studying hard so that one day he can become an engineer, build a home for his family, and help his community. 

John’s story is a powerful reminder of how access to timely eye care can restore not only sight, but also confidence, opportunity, and hope for the future.
