Huki has his life back

Living in the Highlands of Papua New Guinea, Huki could no longer work, grow food or care for himself.

Once known as a hardworking member of his community, he became completely dependent on others. As visitors became fewer, loneliness and depression took hold.

"I didn't want to have to ask others for help," Huki recalls. "I lost energy. I would lie in bed and stay at home."

Everything changed when a cbm-supported community field worker found Huki and arranged for him to travel to Goroka Eye Hospital. There, specialist surgeons removed the cataracts that had blinded him for years, restoring his sight with a simple operation.

But Huki's story didn't end there.

Two years later, when the cbm team returned to his village, Huki came running down the steep hillside to greet them. The man they had once known as quiet and withdrawn was almost unrecognisable – smiling, laughing, and embracing the team with heartfelt gratitude.

Today, Huki is back to building fences, digging latrines, and working in his community. His confidence has returned, his depression has lifted, and he once again enjoys the dignity of providing for himself.

"I am no longer a burden and I am very happy," Huki says. "I am back to my old self. I have my life again."

Huki's story is a powerful reminder that restoring sight doesn't simply change a person's vision – it restores independence, purpose and hope for years to come.
