After the loss of her baby during childbirth, Comfort experienced a severe complication known as obstetric fistula. The injury left her unable to control the flow of urine, affecting her health, confidence, and ability to take part in everyday life.

“I couldn’t control my bladder. It affected me so much,” she said.

Living with obstetric fistula brought both physical and social challenges. Comfort found it difficult to work, and over time became increasingly isolated. Like many women living with the condition, she faced stigma and exclusion within her community.

Obstetric fistula is preventable and treatable, but access to specialist care remains limited. Many women live with the condition for years without support.

Through cbm’s partnership with local organisations, community outreach helped raise awareness about fistula and the availability of treatment. When an outreach team visited Comfort’s community, she recognised her symptoms and decided to seek care.

She travelled to hospital, where she was assessed and scheduled for surgery. The procedure successfully repaired the fistula, restoring her physical health and independence.

“My life has changed. I am feeling good,” Comfort said. “Things I could not do before, I can do them now.”

Following surgery, Comfort also received ongoing support, including counselling and skills training to help her rebuild her livelihood. She is now learning tailoring, creating new opportunities for herself and her future.

Comfort’s story reflects the importance of accessible, locally led healthcare and rehabilitation services. By working through trusted partners, cbm helps ensure women affected by conditions like obstetric fistula can access treatment, regain their dignity, and participate fully in their communities.
