Help a child like Sarbendra walk, learn, and hope again

“...but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.” – Isaiah 40:31

For 15-year-old Sarbendra, the simple act of walking to school became impossible.

Each day, his classmates made the hour-long journey along the mountain paths of rural Nepal.

Sarbendra remained behind – isolated at home, watching his dreams slowly slip away...

Not because he didn’t want to learn. Not because he didn’t have the ability. But because his prosthetic leg had completely fallen apart.

Sarbendra understands that education is his pathway out of poverty

“I had to stop wearing my old prosthetic leg,” Sarbendra shared. “I also had to stop going to school. I was stuck at home… and I missed going to school.”

At just 15 years old, Sarbendra already understands that education is his pathway out of poverty. He dreams of one day working in a government job – bringing security to his family.

But without the ability to walk to school, that future was slipping further out of reach.

Sarbendra’s life changed in an instant when he was just nine years old.

On his way to play football with friends, he stepped on a live power cable lying by the roadside. The electric shock was devastating, and his injuries were so severe that his left leg had to be amputated.

His mother, Padamkala, did everything she could.

Already raising her children alone after her husband’s death, she somehow managed to get Sarbendra a prosthetic leg. But it was poor quality, didn’t fit properly, and eventually broke apart completely.

Without money for travel or follow-up care, there was nothing more his mother could do

So Sarbendra stopped going to school.

Stopped seeing his friends.

And became confined to his home.

Then a powerful earthquake struck his region – destroying homes and turning an already difficult life into one of fear and uncertainty.

“When the earthquake occurred, I tried to run with my mother,” Sarbendra recalls. “But both of us fell to the ground.”

In those terrifying moments, when every second mattered, Sarbendra couldn’t escape to safety. Without the ability to walk, he was left frighteningly vulnerable as the ground shook around him.

But thanks to kind-hearted supporters like you, Sarbendra’s story did not end there.

Through cbm’s local partner in Nepal, a mobile rehabilitation camp reached his remote community.

There, Sarbendra was assessed, measured, and fitted with a new prosthetic leg.

And today, he is walking again.

“I have now returned to school after getting my new prosthetic leg,” he says. “I like it because I can walk freely on it.”

Just imagine that transformation.

From being isolated at home…

To walking to school again. Learning. Laughing. And reclaiming his future.

Right now, there are so many children across Nepal living with treatable disabilities – unable to access school, healthcare, or opportunity simply because their families cannot afford the care they need.

Your support doesn't just change a moment - it changes a lifetime

Because when a child can walk… they can go to school.

When they can go to school… they can build a future.

And when they can build a future… they can help lift their family out of poverty.
